When we bought this house, over 15 years ago, we didn’t know much about home buying. As a result, we made a rookie mistake: we bought a home without a working HVAC system. We knew the heating and cooling system didn’t work when we bought the house. However, we thought we could get it fixed for a few thousand dollars. Not! It ended up costing us close to 10 thousand dollars. We ended up having to get the entire HVAC system completely replaced. That meant new heating and cooling units, new ductwork, and new everything else. The old HVAC system was completely trashed and must not have worked for years. Our son is about to buy his first home and the first thing we told him is to make sure that the HVAC system works. He is really glad we told him this because the house he was looking at only has a portable heater and portable air conditioners. He has decided to go ahead and purchase the home anyway but he got over 20 thousand dollars taken off of the asking price. With that he should be able to buy a very nice HVAC system. He said he is leaning towards a ductless mini split system. I don’t know much about those. I have heard that they are very cost effective HVAC systems. However, if it was me, I would just get a standard forced air system. I understand how those work and they have been used for many years now. I guess I just don’t trust new HVAC technology. However, it is our son’s home and he wants greener HVAC technology. So I guess he will go with the ductless mini split system.
